ALBANY - The state Department of Transportation has upgraded its 511 New York system, including a new free mobile device application that provides New Yorkers with up-to-the-minute information regarding traffic, transit and emergency service notifications as well as weather advisories.
The 511NY Mobile Application is a free app that Blackberry, iPhone and Google Android mobile device users can download to easily access weather, transit and traffic conditions. The app, which is operated by the state Department of Transportation (DOT), can be found in respective app stores and will be made available on additional platforms in the near future. The new services make real-time travel information, already available via phone and Web through 511NY, more accessible to people as they are traveling.
"As we've seen with this harsh winter, it's vital that New Yorkers have immediate access to urgent information regarding travel, transit and emergency notifications," Governor Andrew Cuomo said. "This new app, along with additional features to this innovative DOT program, is an example of how government is making full use of the technological platforms that are not just gaining popularity, but revolutionizing how we interact."
The new app is part of an upgrade to DOT's existing 511 New York system, which was created in 2008 to provide real-time critical information to travelers, such as road closures, accidents, construction, transit delays and inclement weather information. Other additions to 511 New York include:

This past Thursday, January 27, 2011 a grassroots style event took place at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA. A Free Day of Javascipt on Mobile attracted some of the best mobile web minds in the Bay Area to discuss the current state and future of javascript on mobile and the mobile web in general.
MJG International led by Marc Grabanski organized the event in a matter of weeks. The event was practically unpublicized, primarily spread by word of mouth (a.k.a Twitter), yet “sold out” in just 23 minutes! Did I mention it was free? with free t-shirts? free food? and noblatantsales pitch?
This conference is about getting together with people who want to build and create cool things with great people. Its not about creating a conference business, hence the decision to make it free and keep independent of cash sponsors. – MJG

The ever-expanding smartphone and mobile application market, as with the economy at large, depends on the support of small business to keep the engine of growth running smoothly. You could say--as we often hear from politicians regarding the country in general---America's legion of small, privately-owned companies are the foundation upon which the continued success of the wireless sector stands.
For Apple, it may have been consumers that first launched the iPhone into the stratosphere, but it is Steve Jobs and company's flagship product's growing adoption by business, particularly the millions of smaller ones, that will keep it, if not on top--Google's Android platform is quickly catching up and RIM's BlackBerry isn't going anywhere--then near the summit of today's unprecedented mobile device boom.
